Mass Transformation

35 Years Later

A special event took place on the Amherst Campus of the University of Massachusetts during the four days of September 25-28, 1986.

Assisted by donations of cash, materials, equipment, and refreshments, nearly 4,000 volunteers painted, cleaned, decorated, and landscaped the 28-story University Library, now the W. E. B. Du Bois Library, adding the finishing touches to $2.5 million in state-funded renovations to the building.

Known as Mass Transformation, this project was much more than a four-day event; it was the culmination of a 10-month planning process that involved campus-wide collaboration among many agencies and offices.
