Reception and talk
Over a span of nearly forty years, Paul Rheingold collected more than 55,000 examples of what is commonly called “vernacular photography.” Please plan to join us for a talk on Thursday, July 11, from 4-6 pm, at Old Chapel, UMass Amherst, to learn more about this extraordinary collection, which Paul donated to the Robert S. Cox Special Collections and University Archives Research Center.
Dating from 1860—the early days of photography—through the emergence of color photography in 1930, these photographs were taken by a mix of amateurs and professionals, nearly all of whom were anonymous.
The talk will be followed by a reception.
