Since the arrival of Dean Mani in August of 2022, the UMass Amherst Libraries have begun to use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as both an inspiration for the work we do and a framework for assessing how our work interacts with and affects our environment and our communities.

With the mission of being “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future,” the SDGs were launched in 2015 and comprise 17 goals that address social, environmental, and intellectual challenges.

“The SDGs are really my compass,” says Dean Mani. “They offer a structure in which we can contextualize the decisions we make, and they allow us an ability to be intersectional in how we approach our work.”

We’ve added SDG icons to each of the stories in this issue of Bookmark to illustrate how the Libraries’ work contributes to this vital global endeavor and we invite you to join us in making the SDGs a part of how you engage with your life and work.
